For today’s exploration, we are heading to a remote village in Nara Prefecture to discover a school that has been abandoned since 1998. Night is beginning to fall, so our visit will have to be a race against the clock. We easily make our way inside the building, which was first opened in 1952, through an open window. In the first classroom we explore, we come across several portraits of men resting on the floor; we later found out these were the school’s former principals. In the hallway, we are surprised to spot several unicycles lined up against the wall. Always eager to try new things, I attempted to ride one but couldn’t manage more than a few inches—the flat tire certainly didn’t help. As we leave the school, we photograph the building, beautifully framed by cherry blossoms in full bloom; the setting is absolutely magnificent. We pose out front in our rabbit masks under the curious gaze of a few locals passing by.

Nearsighted or farsighted, here is a forgotten place that might just strike a chord with you: an abandoned ophthalmology clinic, no less. A little gem located near a very busy road in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. We carefully explore this unusual derelict spot, where every single corner feels like a fragment of history to be studied….
After a first failed attempt due to increased site surveillance featuring guards and guard dogs, I returned a year later to try this legendary Belgian spot again: the Val-Benoît University in Liège. The weather is absolute trash; I’m in Liège, and the scenery is so incredibly depressing that if I were prone to it, I…
The Politička Škola Josip Broz Tito was once a prestigious center of learning for young communists in the region. Founded during the Yugoslav era, the school was dedicated to teaching politics, history, and economics according to communist ideologies. The school’s buildings were imposing and modern, reflecting the architecture of that time. However, following the fall…
On August 2, 2013, we arrived in the town of Anderlecht, Belgium, to explore a former veterinary school. Built in 1910, the building is located right in the city center, but access was relatively simple—an open window practically invited us inside. The site had already been abandoned for about twenty years, and we had no…
We headed to the small Japanese island of Hachijō-jima to explore a long-time dream: the Hachijo Royal Resort, one of the most beautiful abandoned palaces in the world. We took the hour-long flight from Tokyo with a knot in our stomachs, terrified the expedition might fail. The island felt deserted, completely off the tourist trail,…
What a perilous exploration! Our destination was Nichitsu, an abandoned mining town tucked away since the 1980s in the Saitama Prefecture—a place completely lost in the mountains. Back in its heyday, the town was home to 3,000 residents, but today it is entirely deserted, save for a section of the mine that remains active. We…
