Sokichi School

For today’s exploration, we are heading to a remote village in Nara Prefecture to discover a school that has been abandoned since 1998. Night is beginning to fall, so our visit will have to be a race against the clock. We easily make our way inside the building, which was first opened in 1952, through an open window. In the first classroom we explore, we come across several portraits of men resting on the floor; we later found out these were the school’s former principals. In the hallway, we are surprised to spot several unicycles lined up against the wall. Always eager to try new things, I attempted to ride one but couldn’t manage more than a few inches—the flat tire certainly didn’t help. As we leave the school, we photograph the building, beautifully framed by cherry blossoms in full bloom; the setting is absolutely magnificent. We pose out front in our rabbit masks under the curious gaze of a few locals passing by.
