Hotel Jadran — Abandoned Hotel in Croatia
Croatia clearly demonstrates the ruin that can be triggered by a violent collapse in tourism within sectors dominated by large-scale hotel complexes—outsized constructions built to accommodate rapidly growing mass tourism. Ultimately, these estates turn into literal financial sinkholes, if only to maintain them.
The Hotel Jadran, located in Tučepi in southern Croatia, is no exception to this tourist failure. Its construction began in 1948, using thousands of German prisoners as forced labor. It was inaugurated in 1954 before being abandoned in 1993 due to a dwindling clientele and the aging of the facility. It is a ‘death’ that has been more or less resuscitated over the years, as successive projects have aimed to restore its former charm. This exploration served only to witness the looting and vandalism that have further sealed the fate of this hotel.

Since our visit, this abandoned place has come back to life. It is now listed on our map of repurposed locations.
