Sainte Courjault Institute
Discovering one of Italy’s most famous abandoned sites, the Sainte Courjault Institute (more commonly known as the “Red Cross Hospital”). This massive building, tucked away in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, was decommissioned in the 1980s. The site owes its fame to a magnificent chapel featuring a red cross painted on the ceiling. Unfortunately, this “sacred” room has been heavily vandalized and tagged; using Photoshop, I have tried to restore the dignity of the space by removing these unwelcome marks.
Despite its many years of abandonment, plenty remains inside—such as the rooms filled with rows of metal beds that evoke the image of a haunting orphanage. Nature has reclaimed the building, as seen by a tree that has managed to grow right through the concrete floor of a bathroom; the contrast is incredible. It is an enjoyable abandoned site to explore, typical of what one can find in this country. After extensive research, I was unable to find any vintage photos or a complete history; I could only gather that it served as a hospital and later as a summer camp. The true story of this place remains a mystery.
