We arrive in Vercelli, a city located in the Piedmont region. Before us stands a rusted, padlocked gate protecting a jungle that almost completely camouflages a pulmonary hospital abandoned since the 1990s: the Bertagnetta. This site, which once held up to 120 beds, is now—due to a lack of budget or a new purpose—completely overrun by the wilderness. Its final use before total decommissioning was housing Rwandan refugees. To get inside, we could have climbed the gate in plain sight, but as always, we chose the more difficult path. Circling the property, we went through the back to begin a long trek through nettles (while wearing shorts). Once inside the hospital, we discovered a place that has been heavily vandalized, offering very little to comfort us for our battered legs. It is empty, but the atmosphere remains just as eerie.

Exploring the former Miro nightclub, nestled in the province of Udine within the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, immerses us in the remains of what was once a nightlife giant. As you approach the structure, a vast, deserted tarmac esplanade leads toward the main entrance, flanked by towering palm trees that seem to stand guard. Above the…
Built around 1955, this sanatorium lived several lives, including a conversion into a nursing home. Due to safety non-compliance and renovation costs that were simply too high, the decision was made in 2010 to abandon it in favor of a newly built medical residence right next door. The building has been heavily vandalized, and a…
Leaving the abandoned orphanage we had just explored, Marie and I happened upon this abandoned Catholic boarding school located just a few meters away. Built in 1909, this derelict site doesn’t offer much of interest, as it has unfortunately been completely vandalized. Currently, there are no rehabilitation plans for the ‘Padri Giuseppini’ institute.
Here is an abandoned location that has lived many lives. Built in 1912, the site was originally a hotel called the Grand Hotel Prealpi. During the First World War, it was converted into a military hospital. After that, it became a religious boarding school known as the Padre Beccaro Institute. Before finally falling into abandonment,…
The former Sjögunnarsbo Sanatorium, located in the town of Ulricehamn in Västra Götaland County, Sweden, has been abandoned for several years. More recently, it served as a nursing home and then as a housing center for refugees. Inaugurated in 1916, the sanatorium was built by the architect Ivar Tengbom, who himself suffered from tuberculosis at…
The exploration of this isolated Japanese clinic in Hokkaido begins in front of a multi-story building whose reddish facade is peeling heavily under the harsh winter climate. The main entrance, half-buried beneath thick snowdrifts, opens into an interior that immediately plunges the visitor into an icy atmosphere. The extreme cold has literally transformed the place:…
